3D Batik Vases
3D batik vases
Batik textile is famous for its wax resisting technique.
Using wax to seal certain area and repel dye, so that when the wax cleaned, it will leave the pattern as the footprint of the wax. Layer by layer this process is repeated until the intricate batik pattern is created.
The pattern on the Batik textile has special meanings rooted to the Javanese conceptualization of the universe; each pattern has special meaning and messages, incorporating patterns such as flowers, nature, animals, folklore or object.
‘3D batik’ attempts to explore the essence of the traditional batik process and extend it into the three-dimensional realm, celebrating its cultural meaning in a 21st century idiom. Three-dimensional casts of traditional Indonesian objects (in this case the oil lamp) are made in wax and placed into a single block mould that is then filled with resin. The set resin cast is cut to reveal an array of different sections through the wax forms contained within. Finally the wax is melted out to reveal the part-voids of the original objects.
‘3D batik’ creates a set of vases that are developed in the same spirit as the textile and extends a cultural tradition and identity beyond the familiarity of its limitations.
